The Folk Tales started with the aim to provide immersive cultural experiences to travelers in India. Their tours are designed around local food, dance and songs, languages, dress, history and folklore. They work directly with village communities away from mainstream mass tourism and support communities by using local guides and homestays, and their guides often do other jobs such as farming or teaching in school. Tourism provides additional income to them and keeps them in the villages, and helps encourage young people to return to their villages after their studies in the cities are finished. Importantly they also involve women at many levels in decision making in the running and hosting of their homestays, and all the stakeholders are ensured a fair wage and livelihood.
